Swain's Story
Swain is listed as a grocer in the "Baines's directory and gazetteer directory of 1822" for Goole.
His father-in-law is also listed as a grocer in the same publication, it could be that after marrying Hannah her father helped him setup as a grocer or brought him into the family business.
Certainly previous to this, Swain was recorded as a labourer (probably an agricultural labourer) when he was living in Snaith in 1818, where he probably spent his early life. By 1822 he was a grocer and living back in Cowick.
